  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Taras -- Decent "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Aren't Dead", but the bad may easily outweigh the good for some : Redshirts, which could have been called Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Hijack the Ship to Cuba, features an endearing premise that Scalzi admits (in these same pages) has been visited before by other authors in a variety of media, that a character in a work of fiction gains awareness of the "Narrative" dictating their actions, and tries to understand or change their fate. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Oh My Gosh!Top Contributor: Fantasy Books -- I loved the idea of a parody of Star Trek – ... : Redshirts (2012) didn’t knock my socks off. My expectations were probably unrealistically high. I loved the idea of a parody of the TV show Star Trek–The Original Series (1966-1969), which is why I read this book. The redshirted security guys on Star Trek had a short life span. I love Galaxy Quest (1999), a parody movie of Star Trek. The parody book Redshirts isn’t as good as the Galaxy Quest movie. The book’s story is told third person, past tense, from Andrew Dahl’s point of view. Of interest at the end of the book are three codas, Coda I, first person, Coda II, second person, and Coda III, third person. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2017 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from shoppingpiggy -- Love this author, except for this book : Even though I knew this was a satirical, silly book, I still expected to enjoy it. I grew up on the original Star Trek TV series, love his other books, and have enjoyed other fantasy/SF satirical authors, so I figured I was in the sweet spot for this. Nope, I am definitely not near the spot, much less the sweet part. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Married to she who must be obeyed -- take an old joke "never be a red shirt on Star Trek" and extrapolate it into a damn good story : John Scalzi is my go to author for Sci-Fi. Since i discovered him at the beginning of C19 lockdown I have spent a fortune on buying and reading his books. Redshirts is just another example of how he takes an idea and just makes a damn good story from it. His brain must on on over load with plots. For those of us old enough, there used to be a joke in the era of the original Star Trek that every time an away team beamed down to a planet the security guy (the Redshirt denoting security detail, when we played Star Trek in school in the 60's no one wanted to be the Red Shirt because they always had to die and never got the girl.) would be the first one killed , but the away team which always consisted of the most senior officers on the ship would (like really, the top guys who run the ruddy ship, I mean we always asked what would happen if they got killed, but they never did because the script writers weren't allowed to kill them. They could get flesh wounds or serious diseases but they would be cured by the Dr who would have a great cure 'extrapolated' in the last five minutes, and the heroes would be able to do it all again the next week. Well, Mr Scalzi has taken the idea and made it into a brilliant 'what if the script writers from the past sci fi shows were influencing the future?' Its a brilliant brilliant story on that theme. Lots of twists, lots of banter and loads of fun. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Martin Jones -- To Boldly Go Where Fiction Has Been Before : Redshirts by John Scalzi presents the odd scenario of a cable TV sci-fi show, projected through a hole in space and time, giving rise to parallel future events. Now just go with it, but for reasons not really explained, the dodgy plot lines of The Chronicles Of The Intrepid dictate what happens to a real space ship called Intrepid hundreds of years later. Since the driving force is a television show, Intrepid’s adventures are shaped by the demands of drama rather than rationality. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 22, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mark Brown -- Fun enough for Trekkies but then goes all "Galaxy Quest" - if you know what I mean : Scalzi is quite a prolific author yet this was the first of his books I read. The plot blurb seemed so promising and intriguing I just had to give it a go. The first half of the book is fun with a whole bunch of delicious nods and winks for all Trekkies out there. However it is all then downhill as it starts to chase the storyline of "Galaxy Quest". The author seems to have spun a single gag out to a whole book yet then run out of ideas. In the middle of the book he seems to have not bothered to write the middle of the book. Stuff just happens. It is more of a sketch of an idea rather than a fully developed story. It is thrown together and slowly falls apart at the end as it dissolves into a bunch of daft appendices where the author throws ideas around in our spare time. Apart from these downsides the book is enjoyable enough with the rapid & highly witty dialogue lifting it just enough for it to be sustainable. I am sure he has written better. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Tapner -- The expendables : A science fiction novel which takes the old conceit that those nameless characters we've never seen before on away missions on Star Trek are going to get killed off. And turns into it something rather original. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from els76uk -- Perfect holiday book : I bought this when I was taking a lazy day off work, and read it in a day – I couldn't put it down – which is very unusual for me. The author has a distinct style which I like a lot – slightly dark, but very entertaining. The concept of the book is excellent, but I couldn't help thinking at first that it was very similar to a Black Mirror episode. As you read on, this turns out not to be so true, which made me happy. I don't want to go into too much detail in case of spoilers – but I can't recommend this highly enough. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 30, 2019 )
